Great decision. We find an armful of tourist activity information and meander to the town’s campsite where we hop on the bikes and weave through a small village beneath the peak of the Wetterhorn .
We find the Glacial Gorge where a churning caramel coloured river of melting ice has carved a deep furrow through the mountain. We follow along a metal walkway & dark, wet rock tunnels up to the tongue of a glacier.
Dotted along the surrounding cliff faces are rock climbers, abseilers, bungey jumpers….
Just as well we crawled into bed early because those famous tunnelers were at it all night, punctuating the night’s silence with dynamite blasts that ricocheted around the mountainous ring/amphitheater and filled the valley with enormous BOOMS that you could feel in the chest.

Rainy Day. Slow rise reading whilst listening to the soft rain outside. As the sun struggles out, I head for a run beneath the shadow of the Eiger and return to Swiss muesli ( another Swiss invention; apparently they eat it all day - any meal is muesli time ) and school.
The boys hop on bikes and ride the steep hill to the ‘dorf backerei’ and return with black bread..mmm.
Off for a walk up ( and up and up ) the mountain to Bort.
2 hours later, after almost vertical walking ( Jeff reckons it reminds him of Nepal), we snack, bliss out on the panorama of glaciers, UNESCO listed traditional farming landscape and dribble downward. We’re incredulous that the kids made it - especially Kib. Wil had a whinge or two but Kel told stories all the way up! We flop down with a coffee and Kel whizzes about on her scooter!?

More school and then Tom Yum soup for dinner.
dice roll
Wil ( best taste) - swiss chocolate! Creamy ,milky with huge numbers of varieties. Not mass produced covered in wrappers.
Kel (best part) - the walk. The day was lovely and my legs felt happy. I was very proud of myself.
Jeff (best man-made) -cow bells especially the big low sounding ones. Its beautiful having the tinkling and tonkling in the mountains & fields.
Jen (best natural wonder) - derr! The mountains. Much more appealing than the higher skiing town of Zemmat as the rolling green hills,flower-filled fields and small traditional farms are just so dinky and miniaturized and contrast so strongly against the powerful alps.
